He became a loner as the only penguin in Shiverpool, Antarctica interested in surfing. When Cody was very young, Big Z gave him a souvenir surfing medal, and Cody became determined to become a great surfer like Big Z. In an early interview, Cody and his brother are highly disrespectful of their mother. The movie is made in a semi-documentary format with a film crew supposedly following Cody throughout the story. The waves in some of the surfing scenes are impressive. SURF’S UP is a well-made, entertaining, animated family movie featuring a small penguin named Cody (voiced Shia LaBeouf) who wants to be a star surfer like his hero Big Z. There is plenty in life that can be made humorous in a good script without resorting to that. We are concerned, however, the box office may suffer because Cody is less likable than a hero should be and because the bathroom humor so unnecessary, including the use of urine as a cure. MOVIEGUIDE® commends Sony for the quality of its animation and the uplifting conclusion. The question is will Cody learn what he needs to in time for the big competition and will Cody learn that there is more to life than winning. Fortunately for him, he is befriended by Chicken Joe and Lani the lifeguard and her uncle, though he does little to deserve their friendship. Cody quickly challenges the reigning champ, Tank Evans, but learns he has a lot to learn. Cody joins the band of surfers headed for the tropical islands for the big contest. Mikey, a surfing talent scout, comes looking for competitors for the Big Z memorial surfing competition. Overall, this movie is exactly what it sounds like a penguin learns a valuable lesson through hard work, while the movie itself keeps up an interesting competitive surfing theme throughout.SURF’S UP is a well-made, entertaining, animated family movie featuring a small penguin named Cody who wants to be a star surfer like his hero Big Z. If it did actually say to cut yourself, I would have rated this movie a lot lower, but it keeps up the very kid-friendly vibe and still has plenty in it to captivate adults and teens alike. To clarify, while some reviews here claim that a character said to "go cut yourself," the truthful statement was actually "don't cut yourself," stated when a character was warning another about not cutting themselves on something. There are some moments in which potty language is used here and there, but there are no moments any worse than that. It feels like I'm actually watching a documentary about surfing. It's colorful, well-animated, the characters have creative personalities, and its all done in a commentary point-of-view that I personally find to be one of the best qualities of the movie itself. There was never a point in time where I disliked this movie. Probably would call it appropriate for ages 12+. I just thought some of you would want to know, just in case you're weirdos like us.Īll in all, the kids weren't scarred for life, but I don't think I'd let them watch it again until they were older. Older penguin says to younger penguin: "Looks like you got a little sand in your egg sack, fella," implying he has sand in his swimsuit. One character called another character a "pecker face." There were also several innuendos that I caught (and thankfully my kids did not).Ĭhicken refers to his "nuggets" (an obvious innuendo to me that, thankfully, my kids missed)Ĭhicken (who acts like a pothead throughout the movie) tells a group of penguins that they look hungry, and "must have the munchies." I chose the movie based on this website saying there was no language, and that wasn't exactly true. The story/plot was pretty wholesome and had a happy ending. The movie was pretty funny, with plenty of jokes that were more for the parents than the kids. Shia LeBeouf voiced the main character, and, what can I say? I'm a fan.
